On a recent weekend trip, after visiting Blackpool, we drove south to Liverpool for a one-day sightseeing tour. This limitation meant we were restricted to one area, the waterfront.

Much like Blackpool, Liverpool is disappointing in that there is no pool there. J and L were however satisfied with a fancy fountain right outside where we parked.

The architecture is an interesting hodge-podge of new and old styles. The new stuff doesn't look so bad either, like it does in some places.

The city is on the River Mersey and has been a popular shipping port for centuries. The Albert Dock has five huge warehouses built in 1846 and closed in 1972. The area was restored and now is home to a plethora of museums, shops, and restaurants. We had lunch at one of the eateries. The menu featured a Scooby Snack which I could not resist ordering. It's a burger with bacon, cheese, onions, pineapple. On the side is a boat of chips (french fries) with chili and cheese on top. Luckily we did a lot of walking that day and I was able to eat just about all of it.

The maritime nature of the area is obvious from the giant astrolabe on the dockside and the Museum of Liverpool.

Liverpool's main claim to fame for most people is The Beatles. We did see the Yellow Submarine just before we went to the Beatles Story, a walk-through exhibition of Beatles history and paraphernalia. But that will get its own post!
