Book Review: Amulet: Book Two The Stonekeeper's Curse by Kazu Kibuishi

Amulet: Book Two The Stonekeeper's Curse by Kazu Kibuishi

Continuing from Book One, our intrepid family is continuing their adventures on another planet (or in another dimension, it's not really clear). The country is populated with people who are slowly turning into animals, so there's plenty of cute supporting characters. The bad guys are the elves, who have taken over and are oppressing everyone. The mom has been poisoned, so children Emily and Nevin are looking for a cure. The world does have a cure-all--the fruit of a Gadoba tree. Naturally, the only known Gadoba forest is on top of a forbidding mountain from which no seeker has returned. Emily has the amulet that gives her power and thus confidence to succeed where others have failed. The amulet talks to her and tries to take over her will, so she needs to resist its desire for overkilling or going it alone. She climbs the mountain with a new ally, Leon Redbeard (a fox), and Cogsley, one of her grandfather's robots. Meanwhile, Nevin takes his mom and some other refuges to get back their walking house (pretty awesome!) which is being guarded by the elves.

The story is expanding nicely, with some complications growing up for both the family and for the elves. I like a book where the bad guys are not all bad, even when the elves do some horrible, unelvish things. The book is very reminiscent of the Bone graphic novels in the best possible way.

Recommended.
