Movie Review: Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)

Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) directed by David F. Sandberg

Billy Batson (Asher Angel) has shared his powers as Shazam (Zachary Levi) with his adopted brothers and sisters. They act as local superheroes in Philadelphia, where they are just as often blamed for the bad stuff that they don't completely fix. The movie starts with a bridge collapse where the Shazam family saves all the lives but the bridge itself collapses anyway. That night, Billy has a meeting with everyone to discuss what went right and what went wrong. The real problem is no one besides Billy is invested in the "team" idea. Things get difficult when the Daughters of Atlas show up to defeat the heroes and take back the powers that were granted to Billy by the Wizard (Djimon Hounsou).

Comedy, action, and family drama are packed in to this movie. There are plenty of references and borrowing from other films, a bit too much a times. It's dangerous to remind viewers of other, better films. Even so, the film is legitimately funny and has a lot of heart. The special effects are so-so at the beginning, saving everything for the mythological overload at the end, which is impressive. The movie takes almost no risks and has only one surprise twist that works. It's a fairly average superhero entertainment.

Mildly recommended--this is a summer popcorn flick.
