Cub Scouts Activities September 2019

My youngest son has started in Cub Scout in the same pack that his older brother was in. Since I've had five years of experience, I bit the bullet and signed up as the den leader for his Lion Den. We went to a local Scout Store over the summer to pick up our uniforms which we wore to the first night.

Us in our outfits

The first meeting was recruitment night so I had all the new Lions (just three to start with) in a room. We learned the Scout Sign and Scout Salute. We also have a den theme song, borrowed from the leader guide. It's sung to the tune "If You're Happy and You Know It." The lyrics are switched:
If you're a lion and you know it, show your claws!
If you're a lion and you know it, show your claws!
If you're a lion and you know it and you really want to show it, show your claws!

If you're a lion and you know it, show your strong!
If you're a lion and you know it, show your strong!
If you're a lion and you know it and you really want to show it, show your strong!

If you're a lion and you know it, give a roar!
If you're a lion and you know it, give a roar!
If you're a lion and you know it and you really want to show it, give a roar!

If you're a lion and you know it, do all three!
If you're a lion and you know it, do all three!
If you're a lion and you know it and you really want to show it, do all three!

We went to First Fruits Farm to harvest produce that they will donate to food banks in the area. This particular afternoon we harvested potatoes. The work was fun but tougher the taller you were (i.e. farther from the potatoes). They had an amazing machine that pulls up the potatoes from underground and leaves a long line of potatoes (and rocks) that we picked through to find the good ones.

Harvesting potatoes

We harvested about 30,000 pounds of potatoes (there were other groups there, not just our Cub Scout pack). We felt great afterward, except for all the dust and dirt we collected on ourselves.

The month ended with our first pack meeting. The Lions didn't get any awards but we did play some fun games. The most challenging was trying to stack cups. I know that doesn't sound very challenging but the scouts were not allowed to touch the cups. They were given a rubber band with four strings tied to it. They had to pull the rubber band wide enough to snap onto the cup, move the cup to the top of the stack, then pull it off the cup without knocking over the stack. The boys had a lot of fun and practiced some teamwork too!

V-Day Review: Every Zombie Eats Somebody Sometime

Every Zombie Eats Somebody Sometime: A Book of Zombie Love Songs

Just in time for Valentine's Day, there's a book of zombie love songs. Well, it's a book of love songs rewritten with zombie lyrics. For example, this is the rewrite of the Beatles classic "Yesterday."
Yesterday,
All the zombies seemed so far away,
Now it looks like they're here to stay,
Oh, I'm hungry for something gray.
Suddenly,
I'm just half the man I used to be,
Part are falling off of me,
Oh the virus came on suddenly.
Why she
Had to bite me I don't now, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something's wrong, now I want some brains.
And so on. The songs are all pop tunes from the 50s up to the 90s (I think that most recent song is Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" as "My Heart Will Taste Good"). Some songs are more hilarious than others and your knowledge of classic pop will help enjoy the parodies.

Each song has a zombie illustration at the start, either the performer as a zombie or something from the song ("You're the One That I Chomp," the gag version of "You're the One That I Want," has some "Grease" zombies). Other oddball romantic zombie pictures are included at the end of the individuals songs (dancing zombie couples, zombies at dinner with a violin-playing zombie, etc.). They're barely gruesome and clearly for comic effect. The best was a zombie wedding cake that's a pile of brains. The couple is feeding each other bites of brains. Cute and funny if you've got the right sense of humor.

I hope you have a great Valentine's Day!

We Three Kings in Cheltenham Are

We went to a Lessons and Carols service in Cheltenham last month. Unfortunately, none of the few pictures I took came out. We did get some video of the children from The Catholic School of Saint Gregory the Great singing We Three Kings. Here it is to celebrate the Feast of Epiphany!

This hymn is the new song we are singing before dinner when we light our dinner candle.

If You're Happy and You Know It Make Up Some Lyrics

Today Jacob spent a good half hour reading from a book and pretending that it had the lyrics to "If You're Happy and You Know It" inside. He quickly ran out of the official, standard lyrics. This impediment did not stop him. In case you don't know the song, here's a quick video of it:

The structure of the song is quite clear. All the budding lyricist needs to do is substitute other ways to express your happiness. Jacob is very expressive. Check out this partial list!

  • Rub your eyes
  • Listen to this song
  • Play your recorder
  • Read your magnet
  • Lap your loos [not sure what this means]
  • Make the sign of the Cross
  • Alleluia alleluia
  • Make your face [it wasn't clear how to do this]
  • Sleep in your bed
  • Wiggle your people

I hope you're happy and you know it!
