Cute Kid Pix July 2021

Some more stuff that didn't make it into its own post...

My youngest went to the Cub Scout day camp which actually happened this year (in June, toward the end so the pictures are showing up here). He did some crafts, some BB shooting, and some whittling. He also enjoyed the archery...by the end of the week. At the start, he struggled a lot but he was brave enough to keep trying.

For my daughter's birthday we went to Harper's Ferry and did white water rafting. My sister came along for her birthday, so we had a two for one special. Since it was white water rafting, I did not bring a camera. We went to town afterward and got a treat.

We went back to the Prince George's library, which has opened up again for in-building browsing. The nearby playground was fun too.

An unusual swing

Happy siblings!

We went on an airplane trip and set a reminder in our calendar and in Alexa about checking in ahead of time to get good seats. One of those sources provided a more helpful message; one a more amusing message.

Which would you do?

Cute Kid Pix July 2020

Here's some more pictures that didn't make their own blog post...

Our youngest was the first to have a summer camp. Terrapin Adventures, the local high ropes course and so much more place, had a camp for 5-8 year olds. Our son loved it.

Getting his gear to go

I started taking pictures of the Community Supported Agriculture pick up board because I can't remember all the items. Even so, I wasn't sure after I got home which was the arugula and which was the salanova lettuce.

And that's just a medium share!

We biked from the library to our local Ninja Warrior course in Blandair Park. The kids had a fun time climbing the obstacles...until other kids started showing up. Crowds are never as satisfying, even without the virus.

We visited other playgrounds too.

Too many options to choose from!

We had a bunch of apples and used our Instant Pot to make apple crisp, which I was surprised to discover didn't include any crust or pie shell. We mixed the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream or plain yogurt. Yummy!

Don't let the picture fool you--we ate a lot of the crisp before putting it into tupperware. The portion was much larger at the end of cooking than at the beginning of storing.

My daughter made a snowman in the middle of July!

Our anniversary falls in July and we got take out from a fancy restaurant, The King's Contrivance, that was quite delicious. We didn't remember till the last minute so we didn't get a babysitter for the kids. The at home ambiance was lovely.

Happy anniversary to us!

The kids went to a farm camp. The only pictures I got from there were of my daughter feeding some goats.

Cub Scout Day Camp 2018

My son is now an Arrow of Light, which is the highest level in the Cub Scouts. This is his last year going to our district's Cub Scout Day Camp held at the Howard County Fairgrounds. I did not get the chance to volunteer (the little one is still too little to go as a tagalong), but my son did bring back some interesting items from camp.

Official photo

The camp's theme was pirates, so several of the leaders dressed up for the part. The t-shirt is a fun design though the hat is not as broad-brimmed as in previous years.

One favorite activity is the BB gun range. After the first session, where the boys learned safety, they got to shoot at targets. My son is improving every year. His second target fit the theme quite well.

Geology was a less popular station. He did bring home a pile of rocks which he panned for (much like the Gold Rush people did for gold in Californian rivers). He also cracked open some geodes.

He's improved on his leather-working skills. This bracer has some good logos and coloring and excellent threading in the back.

He also did wood-burning at the day camp, making a fine stave.

Cub Scout Day Camp 2017

My son went to the week-long day camp for our Cub Scout district at the county fairgrounds. He had a good time as usual, with a fun increase in skills. Bug hunters was the theme which was woven into a lot of the activities.

The official photo

His BB gun work is fantastic, all the more amazing with almost no practice from year to year.

He did plenty of other fun activities. He built a small wooden box and a fidget spinner.

A bit of crafting

The bug theme infested the crafts with a bit of carving and sanding on a ladybug and a mysterious bee.

The geode/mining experience was at camp again. This time, my son had a substantial number of rocks, some quite hefty. I don't know if they give the Webelos more items or he just happened to get a good bucket of dirt to sift through. He was happy.

A load of rocks

We heard minimal reports about other activities. Gaga ball was fun as was water sports. His den made an egg crate for the egg drop. The fire department brings a hundred foot ladder and drops a bunch of  scout-designed devices designed to keep the egg from breaking on landing. My son's den designed a contraption that did in fact keep the egg from breaking.

It was a fun camp and we look forward to next year's camp with a pirate theme!

G/T Camp 2016

My school-aged children went to this year's Gifted and Talented Summer Camp held in Howard County. They were in different tracks and so had different experiences.

My daughter was in "Talking Tangrams" which blended learning about folk tales with craftily creating characters out of tangrams. The folk tales came from countries all over the world and included the challenge of recreating characters in the stories.

Cuban myth

The final project was two-fold: narrating a folk tale for presentation to parents on the last day and creating an original folk tale with tangram figures. My daughter wrote the tale of a duck whose garden is attacked by a naughty rabbit. Other animals come to the rescue at the end.

My son was in the "Math Patterns and Problem Solving." That course included solving pre-algebra problems as well as playing a variety of mathematical games. The range of games ran from Sudoku and Kenken to the popular card games Set and Swish.

He also worked on geometric puzzles, such as creating a mirror image.

Cub Scout Day Camp 2016

This year's Cub Scout Day Camp had "Cubstruction" as its theme, so they had a lot of Lego and other building materials throughout the camp. My son is a Bear now and he was assigned to a den that joined a few boys from our pack with boys from another pack.

Den area

Each day started with an assembly followed by the various dens moving from station to station across the Howard County Fair Grounds.

Gathering for assembly on the first morning

I was unable to volunteer this year so reports (and pictures) are not so detailed as last year.

The first day (Monday) had a lot of educational and constructional activities. At the craftsman station, my son made a free-standing book shelf.

Bookshelf

He also made a bird feeder at the science station.

Bird feeder

The geology station was provided by the Mobile Mining Experience. My son panned for rocks on Monday. He had a bucket of dirt that he scooped into a mesh box. The mesh box went into running water, which took away the dirt and left the rocks. He brought home a big bag full of rocks.

A variety of rocks, minerals, and fossils!

At the health station, he learned to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR. Judging from the button he received, he only learned the chest compressions, not rescue breathing.

Congrats!

He also went to the BB guns and Archery stations but the first day was safety training--no shooting. And no take home items, either.

Tuesday was an exciting day for the camp because severe weather came through the area. A tornado was spotted several miles away. The powers that be decided to close the camp two hours early. I got the message while having lunch at Chick-fil-A, so we (the toddler and the daughter were with me) left from there. We parked at the fairgrounds just as the worst of the rain and wind hit. Small hailstones hit the car, which was very unpopular with the toddler. I tried to explain to him that it was just like the noise from popping popcorn. He wasn't convinced, mostly because we've never made popcorn with him. The power went out while we waited for the "all clear" from the tornado warning. My son was disappointed to leave early.

On Wednesday, he did one of the favorite activities at the camp--the water slide. The best hill is conveniently located right next to the assembly area. The slide is a plastic sheet with hay bales on the sides.

Location of the water slide

In the craftsman station, he made a Native American talking stick. During a big meeting, to prevent people from speaking out of turn, everyone agrees that only the person who holds the stick is allowed to speak.

Talking stick (also fun to look at)

He learned about the history of the American Flag and the Star Spangled Banner (the American national anthem) at one of the stations.

On Thursday, they finally went back to the BB rifle station where they actually shot the guns. My son enthusiastically told me about it as soon as I came to pick him up at the end of the day--one bull's eye and one in the first ring, along with two in an outer ring. Even his fifth shot hit the target. His performance was a great improvement over last year (without any practice in between!).

His target

He had his second day of whittling, where he finished a bear. Whittling is not a strong skill for him, though he did make his own carving knife with a clothes pin and a tongue depressor. He had a file to sharpen the edge of the green tongue depressor. If he shows an interest, we'll practice more at home (I have no strong skills either).

Whittling equipment

They had another run at the water slide as well as having water balloon challenges. A dry time was not had by all!

Friday was the final day of camp and had a lot of physical activities--gaga ball, exercise, archery (no target to bring home from there), etc. The last cubstruction project was building a paper rocket, which had a nice result.

Paper rocket

For some reason, they gave out little dinosaurs. Curse their sudden but inevitable betrayal!

What's the new name of brontosauri?

And of course, they gave out a scout patch for attending the camp, along with a nice photo of my son and his den.

Another patch!
