My oldest did a bunch of the practical work for his Cooking Merit Badge from
Scouts BSA. The requirements included cooking meals at home and while out hiking. He started at home with our favorite breakfast, baked oatmeal!

Mugging for the camera |
For lunch, he made burgers, some with cheese! They were very tasty.

Another happy meal |
For dessert, we lit the fire and he made s'mores indoors.

We have debates in our family on whether this is appropriate or not |
|
Putting it all together |
Dinner was another favorite that usually mom cooks--stroganoff. This meal had the most complicated ingredients. He also succeeded in getting different parts of the meal done at the same time.

The meal |
He went for a long hike with mom on the
C & O Canal, which isn't too far from home but provides a lot of flat, easy walking. Since they had to carry food and gear (and water since it was still too cold for the park service to turn on the spigots), they were glad for cooler weather and easier terrain.
|
Ready to hike |
The lunch-stop meal was mac and cheese. Using the travel equipment was the hardest part of the meal prep. The final result was just right!

Readying the hiking stove |
|
Final results |
Toward the end of the hike, they made chicken teriyaki. They took things a little easy, using boiling water to reconstitute a dehydrated meal. That certainly saved on time and carrying lots of ingredients.

Pour carefully! |

The experience was a lot of fun and he will soon have a new badge to display. Thanks to one of the troop's
ASMs for loaning the hiking stove!
