Cute Kid Pix April 2026

More photos that didn't make their own posts...

Since Easter Sunday was a rainy day, we did an egg hunt inside the house before heading off to Mass. Later on, we had brunch at a friend's home.

Geocaching took me to one of Maryland's haunted places...Cry Baby Bridge. The legend goes that a distraught young woman threw her baby into the river below to avoid the scandal of out-of-wedlock motherhood. Another version has her driving a car off the bridge and dying though her child was not found. On dark, windy nights the baby can be heard crying, or so the story goes. The other story about the bridge is that the Maryland Goatman can be seen by people hanging around after dark.

Not so scary on a sunny spring morning

Another geocache had me discovering one of the boundary markers for the District of Columbia. The markers were put down in the 1790s when a survey team that included Benjamin Banneker marked off the 10-mile square area for the capital of the newly-formed United States of America. This particular marker is now in Virginia, part of the square given back to that state.

Yet another geocache had me visiting Brighton Dam, which blocks the Patuxent River and thereby creates the Triadelphia Reservoir. Right next to the reservoir is the Brighton Dam Azalea Garden which was in full bloom.

My son was in a school production of The Comedy of Errors in the role of Antipholus of Syracuse, one of the main characters. He was brilliant. They had a big cast, so they had two different sets of actors play the main characters in alternating performances. In the other cast, my son was part of the Greek Chorus that did exposition drops at the beginning, end, and wherever needed in between.

PA/DE Random Stuff

Pictures from our recent trip that didn't get their own posts...

On our way up to Philadelphia, we ate at Tex-Mex Burrito Mexican Grill, in Wilmington, Delaware. The portions there are amazingly huge--we should not have loaded up on the chips and salsa before our meals came!

Fun sign!

We went to the Upper Moreland Free Public Library to find a geocache and also found this awesome bear bench.

Sit if you dare!

Geocache in a book!

Doylestown, Pennsylvania, has an awesome castle playground in their Central Park. The kids loved exploring it.

Trolly Square just north of Wilmington, had a project to beautify utility boxes. We saw a bunch of them.

Does not dispense gum balls, alas!

Don't let the pigeon listen to your stereo!

The town also has a swinging pedestrian bridge that was part of a geocache. The bridge was built in 1909 and still works well.

Trolley Square also has a war memorial and lots of cool architecture.

On the way home, we stopped at Keyes Ice Cream in Hartford, Maryland, for a treat.

Walkway Over the Hudson Historic State Park, Poughkeepsie, New York

The Walkway Over the Hudson Historic State Park is a pedestrian bridge over the Hudson River that links Poughkeepsie and Highland, New York. The bridge was built in the late 1800s for train traffic and was ruined by a fire in 1974. It was refurbished and opened in 2009 as a pedestrian/cyclist bridge. The walkway reaches 212 feet above the Hudson River and is 6,768 feet long (or 1.28 miles), making it the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.

Starting from the Poughkeepsie side

A map on the bridge shows the various areas nearby, including the neighborhoods and sights of Poughkeepsie, various biking trails, and a 4.2 mile loop trail across the Walkway and the Mid-Hudson Bridge, the bridge for car traffic just south of the Walkway.

With the kids in tow, we did not make the 4 mile loop

A good portion of the bridge is over the town, giving pedestrians a nice view.

The bridge has several signs on it about the history, use, construction, and reconstruction of the bridge.

Building the bridge

The center of the bridge is the location of Virtual Reward: Walkway Over the Hudson, a virtual geocache that requires a picture as proof of being there rather than a signature in a log book.

Me, the bridge, the river

I could have taken my photo from the other side of the bridge with the Mid-Hudson in the background.

We saw the rail lines running along the side of the river and were surprised to see a small waterfall that seems to go underneath.

The bridge does have some amenities, including a plaza with a gift shop, at which we did not shop.

We also saw a work of art that was...interesting?

"DNA Totem"

The kids weren't too enthusiastic about crossing the bridge but we adults appreciated the chance to do something unusual and to get a little exercise as we traveled.
