Violet Evergarden: The Movie (2020) directed by Taichi Ishidate
Following on the events of the television series, Violet continues her job as an Auto Memory Doll, a woman who writes letters for others. She also continues searching for The Major, her supervisor in the recent war where she fought as a tool of the army (and lost both her arms--she has mechanical replacements). The Major tried to convince her she was not a tool and, when they both sustained injuries that tore them apart, he told her, "I love you." She has been on a personal odyssey to discover the meaning of those words. By the end of the film, her searches come to an end in a very satisfying way.
The movie jumps back and forth in time as the narrative unfolds. Violet's past and her impact on the future are shown to great effect. The main theme of human connection is woven throughout the story. Violet seeks a greater human understanding as she helps others to communicate to their loved ones. The story is very touching and well crafted.
Recommended.
